The SummerWinds Stables announces plans to open a second facility at Greener Pastures Equine Sanctuary in Warwick, Maryland, in April, 2007 to expand the organization's current equine rescue and community outreach center.
Thanks to Thoroughbred Charities of America founder, Herb Moelis, SWS has been approved to host an equine rescue and community outreach center at Greener Pastures Equine Sanctuary.
Greener Pastures, a 160-acre farm, was donated by the late Doris Wear
to be used as a sanctuary for abandoned animals, and also for a safe haven
for the resident
population of Blue Herons and American Eagles.
The Summerwinds Stables, dedicated to the rescue of abused, neglected, abandoned and off-the-track horses, is honored to accept this generous gift and the opportunity to further its mission, according to SWS founder and director Elena DiSilvestro.
The expansion of the organization will enable refuge, medical care, rehabilitative
services and training to countless horses and approved placement in carefully
screened, loving and permanent homes.
The new facility at Greener Pastures will facilitate the extension of
the SWS Outreach Program, which provides equine assisted learning for at-risk
youth, youth day camps, and equine education programs for the
community.
"By training at-risk youth to care for our rescued horses, The SWS provides hope and healing to youth and horses that otherwise might feel alone, abandoned and inadequate," said DiSilvestro.
The SWS also reaches out to the community by offering tours and clinics
at our farm, weekly summer camps and day
programs for both the fall and
spring seasons. The SWS plans to keep its Hartly, Delaware, location operational
to continue established community programs.
In addition, The SWS offers Equine-Assisted Learning Programs to children and adolescents in residential treatment facilities, through local school districts, the Kent County SPCA and by way of private referrals.
"By providing an outlet for equine education now, we are molding the equestrians and community-minded citizens of tomorrow. Our organization aspires to fulfill the needs of those seeking equestrian education by providing a healthy and nurturing environment where everyone is welcome," DiSilvestro said.
